Kano State Deputy Governor Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna has stated that reviewing the curriculum of Higher National Diploma in Pest Management Technology would enhance the study of how to provide protection from harmful insects that brings about losses in production across the country.
The Deputy Governor made the disclosure at the closing ceremony of a 5-day workshop of reviewing the curriculum of Higher National Diploma in Pest Management Technology organised by the National Board for Technical Education at Horizon Hotel, Kano.
Dr.Gawuna in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary Malam Hassan Musa Fagge, explained that pest control is an integral part of the agricultural practices.
"Therefore reviewing the curriculum of Higher National Diploma in Pest Management Technology would enhance research and control of migratory pests and ensure the meeting-up of yearly target consumption level for the country," he stated.
However, He revealed that, "This exercise is in tandem with Kano State Agricultural policy in seeing that crop and animal production losses are tackled as a result of pests infestations and infections caused by produce damaging organisms in crops like cereals,legumes,fruits and vegetables said Gawuna".
According to the statement, The Deputy Governor who is also the Commissioner Of Agriculture said that, the review of curriculum in institutions should not exceed 2-5 years in order to go along with global standard adding that, Kano has concluded plans to review curriculum in the State owned higher institutions in an effort to boost productivity.
"During the launching of free and compulsory basic education programme in the State..I recalled that Gov.Abdullahi Umar Ganduje emphasised that curriculum in our higher institutions would be reviewed "Gawuna said.
While commending the National Board for Technical Education for organising the workshop, he however assured that the State Government would adapt the document of the curriculum of HND in Pest Management Technology saying, it would assist farmers and general public in improving agricultural production in the State and the country at large.
Speaking earlier, the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Tpl. Ekpenyong.E.Ekpenyong represented by Director of Monotechnic Department, Mrs. Helen Oduntan, said the board had realised the importance of the HND programme in Pest Management Technology to national development and found it imperative to conduct the exercise now.
He added that teaching and learning would not be proper without review of curriculum, which is considered particularly during accreditation of courses in tertiary institutions.
At the end of the workshop, Certificates were presented to the participants of the workshop who were drawn from Polytechnics, Colleges of Agriculture and related institutions.
