A Civil Society Organisation, War Against Indiscipline (WAI) has demanded Kano Chief Judge, Justice Nura Sagir Umar to open investigation into bribery and other allegations against a Senior Magistrate, Aminu Gabari by a litigant, Ismail Maitama Yusuf.

In a letter sent to the State Chief Judge who is also the Chairman of Kano State Judicial Service Commission sighted by Solacebase, on Wednesday , expressed surprise that despite several petitions against the said Magistrate, nothing has been done about it.

The letter read in part, ‘’Our fact-finding report also reveals that there are series of complaints and petitions on various acts of corruption, discriminatory treatments of litigants and biases against the said Magistrate Aminu Gabari which are yet to be attended to by the Kano State Judiciary.’’

 FULL TEXT OF THE LETTER

The Chairman,
Kano State Judicial Service Commission and
Chief Judge of Kano State,
High Court Complex,
Audu Bako Secretariat,
Kano.

Att: Hon Justice Nura Sagir Umar, Chief Judge.

Your Lordship,

A DEMAND TO REOPEN INVESTIGATION ON BRIBERY AND PREJUDICE  ALLEGATIONS AGAINST SENIOR MAGISTRATE AMINU GABARI OF SENIOR MAGISTRATE COURT NO. 58 NOMANSLAND KANO

The above subject matter refers.

We, the executive members of War Against Injustice, a non-governmental and non-partisan Organization based in Kano, Kano State whose main objective is to create awareness against social and political injustices as well as violation of fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens, write to call for the proper investigation of the above captioned matter.

We read a shocking news about a complaint against the said Senior Magistrate Aminu Gabari by one Ismail Maitama Yusuf (a litigant) who claimed that he paid the sum of N400,000 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira Only) in two tranches to the said Magistrate in order to secure the release of a part of his money deposited in the Court. This disturbing news was published on the 19th Day of March, 2022 by Daily Nigerian (an online Newspaper operating in Nigeria).

Our fact-finding report also reveals that there are series of complaints and petitions on various acts of corruption, discriminatory treatments of litigants and biases against the said Magistrate Aminu Gabari which are yet to be attended to by the Kano State Judiciary.

We therefore urge your good office to immediately open an investigation against the said Senior Magistrate Aminu Gabari in order to save the image of the Kano State Judiciary from ridicule and restore hope and confidence in the minds of poor litigants in the State.

We finally urge Your Lordship, for the interest of justice and fairness, to temporarily suspend the aforementioned Senior Magistrate from exercising his judicial powers pending the outcome of the investigation of the alleged misconducts levelled against him as that will go a long way in removing doubt in the minds of litigants and other good people of Kano State.

We thank you in anticipation of your urgent and necessary action in due time.

Best Regards
Yours faithfully,
Comr. Umar Ibrahim Umar,
Executive Director
