Seeing how the effects of looming climate change is getting worse these days, the Kano State Government has warned the people to avoid illegal cutting down of trees.
It's recalled that, these days, the problem of global warming is getting worse within and the outskirts of Kano City.
According to experts, the worrisome climate change can lead to so many problems among which would includes the unfriendly increase in temperature, floods, health problems, economic setbacks, disappearance of some species and the death of some of the animals that are useful to the society and the rest of them.
In an interview with the press in his office, the Kano State Commissioner for Environment Hon. Nasiru Sule Garo, said that, the present government is very committed to overcome the problem of global warming and warned those who cut trees illegally to hurriedly stop.
The commissioner explained that, government will not allow the people to continue cutting down the trees without planting another ones for the benefit of the environment and the next generations to come.
"We have a law in Kano that prohibits people from indiscriminate cutting down of trees without the permission of the government, and according to the law, anyone who wants to cut down a tree must plant at least two or more," Garo highlighted.
He added that, government is ready to encourage and enforce the use of this law on all those who defy it.
However, Hon. Nasiru Garo said reiterated the readiness of government to mitigate the effects of climate change in the state which has become a thing of concern world-wide.
According to him, governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has ordered the planting of more trees in the state which experts believe will further protect the environment as such, every Local Government Area of the state as well as individuals and groups are encouraged to complement efforts of the state government by planting trees in their various localities and ensure to prevent indiscriminate falling of trees for a healthy ecosystem.
He said, the state has also identified some manufacturing companies in the state polluting the atmosphere, causing breathing challenges as a result of emitting toxic fumes without any form of filtering.
More so, Hon. Garo revealed that, “We have identified some industries releasing toxic smokes dangerous to human health into the air. We won’t allow this to continue unchecked.”
The commissioner also hinted that all hands are on deck to avert earlier warning of possible flood in the state by NIMET just as the state governor has ordered for the purchase of more machineries for evacuation of waste blocking drainages and other water ways.
In another development, the state government has commenced a 5-days screening exercise for street sweepers in a bid to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.
