The Jigawa state government has distributed seedlings to the frontline local government areas to address desert encroachment in the state.
Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa state while flagging-off the distribution of the seedlings held today (Monday) at Andaza village, Kiyawa local government area said, In the last five years, his administration has established 30km shelterbelt in 5 frontline areas of Babura, Birniwa, Sule Tankarkar, Maigatari and Kaugama as well as Maifari forest.
He stated that, the trees planting would covered atleast 4km shelterbelt with 1km distance in each of the 4 local governments namely Babura, Birniwa, Maigatari and Kaugama that are mostly exposed to desertification in the state.
"This administration is partnering with Great Green Wall (GGW) in establishing shelterbelts, woodlots and orchards across the frontline areas of the state," Badaru explained.
Earlier in a remark, The Jigawa state commissioner for environment Ibrahim Baba Chaichai said, Part of the 2.5 million seedlings distributed comprised 800,000 Eucalyptus, 800,000 Neem trees, 545,000 Moringa and 100,000 Keshia plants among others.
During the flagg-off, The seedlings were allocated for planting to various non governmental organisations in the state by governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.
Among the organisations that received allocation of the seedlings through their representatives are Gumel Foundation with 6,000, Dutse Emirate Council 2,000 and Jibwis Jigawa state branch 4,000.
Others are Green Network Initiative,
Hadejia Green Foundation with 5,000 and Green Foundation Nigeria which received 4,000 seedlings.
