A Coalition of human and civil rights activists in Jigawa State held a peaceful protest in support of the retention of the now disbanded Special Anti-robbery Squad, (SARS) by the Inspector General of Police, describing the decision as a setback to security matters.
The group under the auspices of Human Rights Network also presented their demands to the State Governor through his Deputy Alhaji Umar Namadi for onward submission to the President to reconsider the earlier decision to disband the outfit.
In an address before presenting their demands, the State Coordinator of Human Rights Network, Comrade Musbahu Basirka said the human rights community in state was concerned about the decision taking into consideration the role being played by SARS operatives in promoting peace and wiping out criminality in Jigawa state.
"SARS and SWAT should continue as a matter of urgency, put more effort in curtailing the cases of rape and other social vices in the state," he stressed further.
Leader of the protest also said, SARS has helped in averting farmers/herdsmen clashes in Guri, Kirikasamma and Birniwa adding that they are parts and parcel of curtailing the kidnapping activities in Miga, Taura, Jahun and Hadejia local governments areas in the state.
In a remark while receiving members of the coalition during the protest, The governor represented by his Deputy Alh Umar Namadi commended the peaceful nature of the protest and promised to convey their message to the President through the governor, while urging them to sustain the non-violent nature of the protest.
The protesters who rounded from Kiyawa road, Hakimi street to government house area in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital were carrying placards with various inscriptions such as #We Need SARS/SWATT, #Reform SARS, #We support SARS, amongst others.
