Jigawa LG Poll: Lamido's Ward Councillor Emerged Winner, As Election Officials Held Hostage

The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) has declared the candidate of the opposition People Democratic Party (PDP) winner from Chiyako ward, Birnin Kudu local government Council, at the just concluded council poll held last Saturday.

Earlier, Voters who guard against their vote, held hostage all officials saddle with the responsibility of collating the results at the Chiyaco ward as a way of showcasing their right to know the winner of the election as enshrined in the elections guideline.



Among the election Officials held hostage, numbering about 30 include one female Ramla Yusif Isah, a daughter to the incumbent Birnin Kudu Local Government Vice Chairman.

The result of the election which was announced amidst tight security, as protesters held hostage all officials of the election for about 24 hours at the collation center of Chiyako Primary School Polling Unit after what they (Protesters) who casted their vote sensed as a breach of trust in denying them of their choice.

Normalcy has returned in the area as aggrieved mob threatened to cause unrest but were curb down shortly after giving them (voters) their mandate.

Announcing the results, the local government election Officer Balarabe Umar said the winner Yanusa Abdull of the PDP polled 3,952 votes, against the ruling party candidate Yusuf Umar who scored 680 votes.



Initially, the results was supposed to be announced by the returning Officer for the election but due to certain circumstances he wasn't present, it was only announced by Balarabe Umar, the Local Government Election Officer.

Out of the 11 Wards in Birnin Kudu LGA, Chiyaco being a political ward to the former Jigawa State governor Alhaji Sule Lamido has 19 polling units.

In his reaction, former Jigawa State Governor Alhaji Sule Lamido while interacting with journalists in his home town Bamaina residence, commended the voters in the state especially voters of Chiyaco ward who stood firmly to depend their voting rights.

He urged that, Nigerians should wake up and emulate the calibre of Chiyako voters in projecting their political right in the future general elections.
