Jigawa state government has flagged off the Oral Cholera Vaccination Campaign to rid the state away from the menance of cholera.
During the campaign flagged off held today Thursday, at Baranda village, Emir of Dutse Alhaji Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi was administered with the vaccine by the Representative of the World Health Organization at the occasion with the support of Executive Secretary of Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency and other representative of health donor organizations.
However, other top government officials and representatives of the development partners are among those who received the first dose of the oral cholera vaccine.
Newskeeper learnt that, this is the first time that, a cholera vaccination exercise is conducted in Jigawa state.
Reports says that, Since cholera out break in Jigawa state about four months back (June) there are over 500 people who died as a result of contracting the disease.
Speaking during the event, The Executive Secretary of Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim said that, the exercise targeted about 720,000 million people from one year upward.
"We received a number of 1.4 million doses of the vaccines from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency," he explained.
He added that, the exercise would be carry-out in three local government areas in the namely Dutse, Birnin Kudu and Hadejia respectively.
Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim also said that for this time around, the exercise targeted to reach about 720,000 people within the age bracket of (1year - up) in the state.
"Each person vaccinated would received a second dose after 4 weeks," he explained.
In his massage, the Emir of Dutse Alhaji Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi called on his subjects and other people in the state to give maximum cooperation to the exercise and allow their wards to be vaccinated.
In their separate good will messages, Representatives of NPHCDA Malam Muhammad Muhammad, WHO Dr. Terna Nomhwange, UNICEF Malam Hassan Kano respectively appreciated the support they're enjoying in the state and promised to continue to support the state to ensure total eradication of the disease not only in Jigawa but in Nigeria and the world at large.
