As Nigeria's main opposition party grapples with internal strife, Jigawa's PDP branch has thrown its weight behind a potential alliance to reclaim power in the 2027 general elections, signaling a tactical shift to counter the ruling APC's dominance in the state.
This development unfolded during a crucial meeting of PDP stakeholders from all levels in Jigawa State, held on Monday under the guidance of the party's state leader and national heavyweight, former Governor Sule Lamido, at his residence in Kano.
The Newskeeper observed that the gathering comes against a backdrop of deepening PDP crises that have rippled from the national headquarters to regional and state chapters, eroding the party's cohesion since its 2023 election setbacks.
Speaking during the Jigawa PDP stakeholders meeting, Lamido, who served as Jigawa governor from 2007 to 2015, took center stage and narrated the origins of the turmoil to rally unity.
"The PDP crisis started at the national level, spreading to regions and chapters, but we're addressing it head-on," Lamido told the gathering.
He reassured attendees that national leaders are actively seeking remedies to stabilise the party for its supporters.
"At the national front, we're doing the needful to find solutions and a way forward for all members and supporters nationwide - very soon," the former governor stated.
Also, Lamido highlighted an upcoming pivotal session to iron out differences.
"We're set for what's expected to be the final resolution for party members this coming Wednesday, December 17th, 2025, " he announced, urging patience amid the uncertainty.
Turning to Jigawa's strategy, Lamido emphasised the alliance as a smart move for electoral revival.
"In Jigawa, we've opted for an alliance heading into 2027, it's the path to victory against the odds," Lamido declared, linking it to the party's broader recovery efforts.
While delving into the regional fractures, the former governor blamed leadership rifts and post-election fallout, and explained that "the regional chapters have felt the heat from national decisions, like candidate selections that divided us, but we're mending fences now."
However, Lamido stressed the importance of grassroots buy-in for the alliance to succeed.
"Jigawa PDP faithful must stay calm and ready, our supporters are the backbone, and this alliance will amplify their voices in 2027," he implored.
"This isn't just talk; it's action to reposition PDP in Jigawa and beyond," Lamido concluded, vowing swift national breakthroughs to bolster state-level momentum.
Our correspondent reports that as the meeting wrapped up, optimism lingered among stakeholders, who endorsed Lamido's vision for a united front and vowed to await direction from their leader, Sule Lamido, at the fixed Wednesday deadline.
