250 Christian widows in Jigawa State received food and bull support this Christmas from a local philanthropist, Dr. Halima Sulaiman, promoting unity and easing hardship among residents in the state.
NEWSKEEPER observed that the gesture comes as Christians worldwide, including Jigawa State, celebrate Christmas today, Thursday, December 25, making the support a timely boost to the widows' festive season.
Speaking while recieving the food items donation at the event held on Wednesday in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital, the Deputy Chairperson of Widows Women Wing Association of Nigeria, (WIWAN), under the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Jigawa state chapter, Mrs. Happiness Florence, welcomed the donation, saying, "This support is timely and lifesaving. Some widows had nothing to cook for Christmas."
Mrs. Florence thanked Dr. Sulaiman, adding, "This means everything to us."
She stated that "the donation covered Jigawa South-West Senatorial District, coordinated via WIWAN and CAN."
However, Mrs. Florence called on governments to support women-focused initiatives. "Encourage women's leadership participation, aligning with the 30% gender inclusion policy," she urged.
According to her, the gesture, will strengthen the good existing Christian-Muslim relationship not only in Jigawa state but across the country at large.
"The event promoted unity and compassion in Jigawa's diverse community," she added.
Earlier, the local philanthropist, Dr. Halima Suleiman in her address at the event, said the gesture aimed to bring joy to widows facing hardship.
"This support is to put smiles on faces and make the festive period meaningful," she stated.
Represented by her aide, Hon. Umar Baffa, Dr. Sulaiman noted that "each widow will received 10kg of rice, with a bull donated for wider distribution across seven local governments in Dutse Emirate."
He therefore emphasised that "the philanthropist (Dr. Halima) is committed to women's welfare, especially widows."
Dr. Sulaiman's aid who highlighted the power of community support, however appealled to other well to do individuals to support vulnerable people.
