Thousands of PDP members in Jigawa roared their approval in Dutse on Sunday as Mustapha Sule Lamido was affirmed unopposed as the party’s governorship candidate for 2027, pledging to “rebuild Jigawa into a state that works for all.”
NEWSKEEPER gathered that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party conducted its governorship primary election in Jigawa State, drawing members and supporters from the state’s 287 wards to the state capital.
It was observed by our correspondent that delegates and party faithful flooded Dutse early Sunday morning for the affirmation of the sole governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general election held at Mtown center.
Accordingly, the exercise was monitored by representatives of the PDP national headquarters, officials from INEC Jigawa office, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
In his acceptance speech delivered shortly after the affirmation on Sunday, Mustapha Lamido, the son of the former governor of Jigawa state, Sule Lamido, who also flew the PDP flag in 2023, said “I stand before you today with a heart full of gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility.”
He said he humbly accepted the mandate as the gubernatorial flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party for the 2027 elections.
Lamido recalled that in 2023, the people entrusted him with the same responsibility and they ran a campaign rooted in unity, hope, reform, and the promise of a better Jigawa.
“Though we did not secure victory then, we earned the confidence of hundreds of thousands of our people and laid a strong foundation,” he stated.
He said the party was back in the race because the problems bedeviling the state were still present, including unprecedented hardship, bad governance, and insensitive leadership.
Moreover, the gubernatorial candidate also reaffirmed his commitment to the vision articulated in 2023 action plan, which he said "covering unity, economic growth, youth empowerment, education, healthcare, social revival, and institutional reform."
“These are not mere promises; they are a contract with the people, and I intend to see them through,” Lamido said.
He therefore described the reality before the state as stark, citing declining standards in education, strained healthcare systems, rising hardship, and a governance structure that has not met expectations.
“But let me be clear: we are not here to lament, we are here to fix it,” he declared.
Furthermore, the candidate stated that "the mission was to restore competence in governance, dignity in public service, and hope in the lives of the people."
“We are here to rebuild Jigawa into a state that works for all, where leadership is accountable, resources are managed responsibly, and opportunities are accessible to every citizen,” he said.
He, however stressed that he accepted the candidacy not as a personal ambition but as a collective mission to rescue, rebuild, and reposition the state for sustainable progress.
The candidate called on all members of the party to unite, saying victory in 2027 would require shared commitment, discipline, and belief in a better future.
“To the people of Jigawa: I hear you, I see you, and I feel your pains. Give me the opportunity to serve you,” he appealed.
Lamido also thanked the leadership of the party at the national and state levels for the peaceful conduct of the primaries and congratulated candidates across the state.
“Together, we will rise and rebuild our dear state,” he concluded.
Earlier, the chairman of the Electoral Committee sent by the PDP National headquarters, Barrister Isah Ahmed, who supervised the process and announced the result declared that Mustapha Sule Lamido emerged unopposed without a contender and was nominated as the consensus candidate of the party.
“Following the affirmation by PDP members through a voice vote, I hereby declare Mustapha Sule Lamido the duly affirmed governorship candidate of our great party for Jigawa State,” Ahmed said.
