The Chairman of ASUU, KUST Wudil chapter, Comrade Dr Muhammad Sani Gaya has expressed dismay over the circulated social media story that, Kano state government is intending to handover the institute of Tourism and Hospitality (former Daula hotel), Computer Institute, Kura and Sport Academic, Karfi.
The Chairman, appeals to the Kano state government to revert the decision for the interest of safeguarding the education sector in the state.
Comrade Gaya was making the stance of ASUU on the matter during a visit to Kano state Commissioner for higher education in her office.
KUST branch chairman of ASUU together with the Kano zonal Coordinator of the Union, Professor Mahmoud Lawal as representatives earlier said, they were at the Commissioner’s office to remind her about the previous agreement reached between the Union and Kano state government on impending issues as agreed long ago such as payment of their members allowances among others.
Speaking also, The ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Kano Zone, Prof Mahmoud Lawal said he was assigned to find out the position of the agreement reached between the two parties and report back to the National office in order to avoid any industrial action from the union.
He further tressed the need for the State government to comply with the agreement reached.
Responding on the proposed conversion of former Daula hotel which is serving as an Institute of Tourism and Hospitality under the University, The Commissioner for Higher Education Dr Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure explained that yet the government did not release its final decision on the matter.
However, She assured the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil branch that, Kano state government would settle all impending issues as agreed between the government and the union.
"Government is doing its best to redeemed the pledges especially the settlement of the excess workload allowance but due to the prevalence of Covid-19 pandemic which destabilized the socio-economic of the entire world including Kano State resulted to the incapability in resolving the situation," said Dr Bunkure.
A statement from the Chief information officer of the ministry Sunusi Kofar Na'isa stated that, governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has already approved the payment of the allowances.
The statement therefore, appealled to members of ASUU, KUST branch to consider the global phenomenon and exercise patience and commended them for their mutual understanding on the impending claims.
It can be recalled that on 18th March, 2020, with the intervention of the Commissioner for higher education, the ASUU KUST, Wudil, resolved to stop its proposed industrial action after reaching mutual agreement between the Kano state government and the Union.
